Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences

Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences provides higher education (Bachelor and Master Degrees) in various fields. There are 4500 students studying in 20 different training programs. The University provides also supplementary studies. The R&D institution of Mikkeli University is concentrating to following fields of activity: Sustainable welfare, Materials and Environmental Safety (including Environmental technology), Electronic Archiving and Digital Services and Fiber Laboratory.

Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences is Partner No 5 in project “LugaBalt”.  Main activities of Mikkeli University are activities 21 “Analysis and estimation of municipal waste management (Case: Osmino)” and 22 “Preliminary planning of farm-scale biogas plant to Osmino”, but the University is participating also in implementation of tasks 4, 5, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, 19, 20, 23, 25, 26 and 28.     

Project task implementation is carried out by Project Manager, Ph.D. Sami Luste and Project Assistant, MA, B.Sc. Tuija Ranta-Korhonen. The Research Director of the project in the Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences is MA (Tech.) Hanne Soininen.

The representatives of Russian partners and various stakeholder groups have visited Finland in June and October. During the visits of the Russian groups there were organized lections, tours to Waste management centre of company Metsäsairila Oy in Mikkeli, Biogas plant of Juvan Bioson Oy and Organic farm of Muumaa Ay in Juva, exhibition of KoneAgria and company BioGTS Oy in Jyväskylä. Group also visited the Läsäkoski-river in order to get information about the online monitoring project Open.

During the project implementation the experts of Mikkeli University has so far visited the project target area twice; in the end of January 2013, when the Kick-off meeting was organized and in the beginning of November. In November group of Finnish partners visited Osmino and got information about the situation of the Waste management in the area and the future plans. Group visited also one of the farms of the agricultural enterprise “Partizan” (Partner No 7 in the project) and met the director of the enterprise. Group collected a lot of useful information for implementation of the project task. Especially interesting was the visits to the local schools and presentations and reports of schoolchildren. The education of environmental sciences in schools seems to be in high level and the children are working enthusiastically and professional-like. 

As agreed in the project seminar and meeting in Luga and Osmino the Mikkeli University will produce proposals for implementation of activities 21 and 22 until January 20th, 2014. The proposals will be discussed with the other partners of the project and sent to the administration of the target area.
